Asalamualaikum everyone! My name is Abeera Kashif and I’m currently an AS student at Nixor College. For my O level subjects I had biology, chemistry and physics, and even though I enjoyed studying sciences, I decided to switch to social sciences in A levels. I want to pursue psychology as a career later on, but took accounting for a multitude of reasons, one of them being that my father believes it teaches useful skills to anyone who might want to start their own business in the future (and I do).
Everyone tells you that studying accounting in A levels is manageable, and they’re not wrong. Still, nothing in life comes easily, and everything requires effort; the same goes for accounting.
One of the main problems I’ve faced up till now is the mental struggle that comes with knowing that most students already have an edge over you because they’ve been doing this for 3 years. Especially as someone who prided herself on being an academic achiever, it really is a bit discouraging to realise that I’m not grasping the concepts taught in class immediately.
For students who have not done o level accounting, not knowing the basics can become pretty distressing, and with only a year to catch up with the rest of the more experienced students, it leaves a very short amount of time to learn not only the basics that others already know, but to also learn new concepts at the same time.
What amplifies this worry is that I don’t know what to do when I don’t understand something. Although my teacher is kind enough to keep extra classes for us students who haven’t done o level accounting, sometimes I still don’t get the concept and am too embarrassed to ask sir to explain it again. I go to youtube to try and find videos explaining that topic, but i worry that those teachers assume that the viewer already has an o level foundation. Hence, when they skip the basics and jump straight into the advanced concept, I’m left feeling even more overwhelmed and distraught.
Despite all of this, if you’re someone who’s considering taking a level accounting without having done it in o levels, id say go for it! You might regret it at times, or maybe even a lot of times. It may make you feel worried, or lost, but it will also teach you how to handle a difficult subject, deal with your stress and overcome roadblocks which life will inevitably keep throwing your way.
I haven’t yet found the solutions to my problems either, but what I do know is that I can’t let the fear of being judged when asking a question keep holding me back. And most importantly, I know I need to keep solving past paper questions so I can improve, because I’m not one to back down from a challenge, and I hope you, dear reader, aren’t one either.
Wishing you the best of luck,
Abeera Kashif
